Tropical Depression Harvey forms in Gulf of Mexico

Meteorologists forecast Harvey to possibly become a hurricane by late Friday before it makes landfall - that could be along the US coast.

Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center give the current disturbance a 90 percent chance of forming a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours and a 100 percent chance over the next five days. After crossing the Yucatan peninsula and diving into the warm waters of the Bay of Campeche Harvey could even regain Tropical Storm status.

Hill Country Tribune meteorologist Conley Isom says the biggest threat with this system will be flooding. The storm is forecast to move northwest and reach the northwestern U.S. Gulf Coast on Friday.

A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or risky.

This means into the weekend, the times it does rain in South Florida will likely come with some heavier bursts of rain.

Should Harvey travel farther north along the Texas coast, heavy rain and the risk of flooding will correspondingly expand northward along the Gulf coast to perhaps Louisiana.

"Forecast models this early aren't always accurate when it comes to possible paths of storms", Williams said.

Some areas of southern Texas could accumulate anywhere from 10 to 15 inches of rain between now and Saturday. Low developing and strong high pressure system north of the area will produce breezy conditions.

For folks in Central Texas, flooding will be the main concern. That being said, the highest likelihood for landfall would be somewhere near Corpus Christi, Texas. Just behind those remnants is Invest 92, with only a 20 percent chance of tropical development. While we're glad the tropical wave likely won't make landfall as a tropical storm in Florida, the system will likely still be impactful to the state.

Hurricane forecasters warned that Harvey could deliver heavy rain, from 10 to 15 inches across the region, with some places receiving as much as 20 inches increasing the risk of unsafe flooding.
