Days after the highly-anticipated merger between the two factions of AIADMK, party MLAs belonging to deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran, on Thursday demanded that the assembly speaker P Dhanapal be appointed as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The faction led by TTV Dhinakaran has claimed support of 19 MLAs, reducing the strength of Palaniswami government to 115, which is two short of the 117 members required for a majority. Rajendran said the MLAs had told the governor they were "withdrawing" support to the Palaniswami government. The family is banking on the support of 30 Dalit legislators of the AIADMK, by rooting for Dhanapal. One seat is lying vacant following the demise of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

After meeting the governor, the MLAs backing Dhinakaran went to the resort in the coastal village of Chinna Veerampattinam, about 20 km from here. Before the merger, Edappadi Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam had individually met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The AIADMK whip also sought action against them under Rule 6 of the Tamil Nadu Assembly that disqualifies a member for anti-party activities under the anti-defection law.

Speaking to ANI, AIADMK leader, E Rathinasabapathy said, "Dinakaran remains our leader, Sasikala is our general secretary. Rajya Sabha MP R. Vaithilingam will also regret his statement against Sasikala on Monday, forgetting the fact that it was Sasikala who gave him key party posts", a senior MLA in the Dhinakaran camp told the newspaper. Both factions - the AIADMK (Ruling) and AIADMK (Sasikala) - are busy scoring goals without realising that the AIADMK, as an entity, is scoring several self-goals.

"We have come here to take rest", Selvan had said yesterday.

Weather Authority Forecast for Thursday, August 24
Humidity will drop significantly as well, making that low 70-degree afternoon temperature feel even cooler. Mild and humid tonight with overnight lows in the low to mid 70s and still a chance for rain.

With this twist in the Tamil Nadu politics, the state is back to number crunching and resort politics which has been months after Sasikala's daring action to seize loyal MLAs.

He added that the announcement was being made with the "approval" of Sasikala, who is serving her jail term in the disproportionate wealth case in a Bengaluru prison.

The DMK, Congress and IUML are in an alliance.

The opposition leader M K Stalin has written a letter to the Governor of Tamilnadu requesting him to move no confidence motion since the present Govt has lost the majority due to the rebel MLAs sidelining with TTV Dinakaran.
