'Super Mario Brothers' May Be Adapted For a New Movie

The deal, which is being sorted out between Nintendo and Universal (which has also been partnered with Nintendo for a Universal Studios Japan attraction), could result in an animated Super Mario film from Illumination, the production company behind Despicable Me, Minions, and The Secret Life of Pets.

The WSJ go on to say that a Nintendo spokesman declined to comment, as did an Illumination spokeswoman, but we're more than excited at the prospect.

The videogame has previously been adapted into a live-action feature in 1993 that starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Super Mario Bros.

Mario just made a splash on the Nintendo Switch with Super Mario Odyssey, and now it looks like the plumber is finally going to make his debut on the silver screen, too. The film is still in the early stages of planning and wouldn't be exiting any warp pipes for several years, and would be animated at Illumination's Paris-based studio Mac Guff. Apparently, such discussions have been carrying on under the radar over the course of the past year, breeding even further optimism that a deal might indeed come to light.

The weirdest thing about Mario is Missing is how Bowser weaponizes climate change to melt the ice of Antarctica, flooding the Earth so he can steal landmarks. The newspaper said the deal has had its complications, centered around making the Japanese game company "feel confident it will be involved enough in the creative process".
