Mets acquire AJ Ramos in trade with Marlins

Ramos was being shopped around actively by the Marlins, but with the Mets firmly out of playoff contention, they never emerged as a potential trade destination in any rumors.

Ramos, 30, has 92 saves and a 2.78 career ERA over six years in the big leagues with Miami.

"This one is especially tough given our history with A.J.", Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill said. So to part ways is definitely hard. "He was a pro, as usual".

Ramos, who is arbitration eligible, would join Jeurys Familia to give the Mets a one-two punch at the back end of the bullpen next season. If Familia struggles on his return to action, Ramos would remain as the team's closer, a role he has already proven himself to be quite adept in.

"On the heels of Phelps [trade], there was probably a half-dozen clubs that were still in the reliever market", Hill said.

Gonzalez was ranked the Mets' ninth-best pitching prospect, according to MLB.com, but is a few years away from being ready for big league action and doesn't fit into 2018 plans. He was originally signed by the Mets out of the Dominican Republic on March 6, 2013.

Meanwhile, Cespedes ranked just outside of the top-20 Mets prospects.

Fantasy Impact Ramos is under control through 2018, so this was a move made by the Mets to bolster a beleaguered bullpen for next season. "[Gonzalez] is a big victor, big stuff and we like what he can be in the future to help this organization".

"Similar with Ricardo, younger player but athletic, tooled-up young outfielder". Starting pitcher Dan Straily and reserve catcher A.J. Ellis have been rumored among the most likely candidates.
